Fairtrade Fortnight
During Fairtrade Fortnight each class collected Fairtrade logos from home. We also created class pledges to show how we can help farmers overseas get a fairer deal.
Fairtrade Coffee Morning
Primary 7 proved themselves to be both responsible citizens and effective contributors on Friday 7th March when they helped to organise our annual Fairtrade coffee morning.
In the weeks leading up to the event our class Eco Committee reps contacted local businesses requesting donations for a prize hamper. P7 were delighted when Sainsbury's then invited us along to pick luxury Fairtrade items for this worthwhile cause.
The coffee morning and hamper raffle raised a grand total of £200 which will be donated to the Fairtrade Foundation to help one farmer and their family enter the Fairtrade initiative.
Well Done Primary 7!

Eco Schools Flag
Following an assessment visit by Eco Schools Scotland on Wednesday 21st November, the Eco Committee were delighted to be told our school has achieved a fantastic 3rd Eco Schools Scotland flag.
The Eco Committee led an informative tour of our school, showing off the recent improvements to our playgrounds and front garden area.
The assessor was very impressed with our ongoing eco projects in school and made special comment on our new 'Tree Totaliser' which keeps track of our weekly paper and plastic recycling.
Special mention was also made of our Fairtrade activities and links with the Fairtrade Foundation and Tradecraft. Please take a moment to read through our award letter below.
Well done Garnetbank and keep up the good work as we focus on this year's targets.
Garnetbank's Eco Code
The entire school designed logos and slogans as part of an Eco Committee competition to create a new Eco Code for Garnetbank.
The judging committee were looking for an eye catching logo and memorable slogan which would encourage pupils, staff and parents to think about the environment and how we can look after it.
The winning logo (designed by Sophia P3) and slogan (Zhi Lun P4) have been combined and will appear on all Eco Committee communications, posters around school and our school website!
Eco Action !
During the year our Eco-Committee plan lots of activities to help the environment and our local community.
Fairtrade Taste Testing
The Eco Committee, Health Committee and Garden Club all had the opportunity to sample a wide range of Fairtrade fruits during a delicious taste testing session.
The fruits were kindly donated by our local CO-OP store and the store manager, Gary Muir, came along to tell us more about Fairtrade, where in the world our fruits came from and how Fairtrade helps farmers overseas.
Mr Muir was very impressed at how knowledgeable the boys and girls were about Fairtrade already!!
Have a look at some of our taste testing sheets to see which fruits we enjoyed the most.......we all thought the lemons and limes were very sour and made our eyes water!
Fairtrade Activities
This term our school recieved a thank you note and certificate from Tradecraft to thank us for raising £150 last session. This enabled one farmer overseas to join the Fairtrade initiative.
We have also raised funds to buy a Fairtrade Netball and 5 Fairtrade Footballs.
The Eco Committee gave each Upper School class a Fairtrade Football and our school Netball Team, run by Mrs Adams were given a Fairtrade Netball.
TRADECRAFT CHRISTMAS CATALOGUES
This year the Eco Committee decided to raise funds for Fairtrade by sending Tradecraft catalogues home to pupils.
We were delighted at the high levels of interest and overall we raised £149 for Tradecraft.
The school recieved £40 profit from the fundraising and the Eco Committee are going to decide how to spend or donate this money!
Fairtrade Lessons
Mrs Simpson visited all classes throughout Term 2 and delivered a mixture of lessons to promote Fairtrade.
Primary 1-3 explored the Fairtrade logo and learned that buying Fairtrade helps farmers overseas.
Primary 4-5 investigated the cost of a fair cup of coffee. They were surprised at how many workers are needed to produce just one jar of coffee!
Primary 6-7 learned about the 'Banana Chain' - what happens to a banana before it reaches the consumer. They went on to discuss the reality of ‘who gets what’ from the sale of bananas.
Fairtrade Coffee Morning
9th March 2012
In Term 2, the Eco Committee suggested we plan a Fairtrade coffee morning to raise money for the Fairtrade Foundation. The committee thought this would help to support farmers in developing countries but also encourage pupils and their families to try or buy Fairtrade products. Pupils worked with staff and parents to plan, organise and serve during the morning.
Our target was to raise £150 (the Fairtrade Foundation's website quoted this as the amount needed to support a farmer to become Fairtrade). We also raffled an exclusive hamper full of Fairtrade products, kindly donated by Marks and Spencer.
There was a great turn out for our coffee morning and everyone who came along agreed it was a great chance to sample cakes made from Fairtrade flour and sugar! Many cups of Fairtrade tea and coffee were also enjoyed!!
We raised a grand total of £258.40 from our day of action.£150 was donated to the Fairtrade Foundation. The remaining funds were used to buy 5 Fairtrade footballs and 2 Fairtrade netballs.
